We bought the Dyson Pure Cool Fan/air purifiers (both the TP04 and the DP04) and compared them to the Honeywell HPA200 True Hepa Air purifier.

We put them all through a lot of different types of tests, and in this comparison, we will be sharing the results of those tests as well as a description of their features and differences.

First, we should mention that it might be an unfair competition because the Honeywell is just an air purifier with pretty basic features. As we will see, the unit does its job well, but the Dyson’s are jammed packed with hardware and features that make them the clear choice here. But the challenge of this comparison will be to see if you think, the Dyson Pure Cool’s are worth the extra 200 dollars for your situation.

Dyson

Looking at the features it is important to know that the Dyson TP04 and the DP04 are very similar, other than the shape of the fan and a few other things we will get into later, but they both come with two HEPA filters as well as what seems to be two very high quality activated carbon fiber filters with real activated charcoal inside. These carbon filters can absorb harmful pollutants and gases as well as absorb odors like smoke and pet odors.

Honeywell

The Honeywell also has 2 HEPA filters, as well as an activated carbon filter but its carbon filter does seem to be of a bit lower quality than the Dyson’s, and there is no actual charcoal we can see. It is probably just a mesh that has been treated with charcoal or something like that, though we are not sure.

Both the Dyson’s have the same display and sensors. They can be controlled by the single button on the unit or by the remote control. You can also use the app, which has all the features of the remote control and much more.

There is a built-in particle counter which gives you real-time reports of the air quality; including two sizes of particles. You can check for volatile gases or nitrogen dioxide. You can also monitor the current temperature and current humidity of your room. We liked that all this data can be tracked on the app so you can monitor if there are events that happen in your home that trigger unsafe levels.

The Dyson app also lets you schedule your air cleaning on certain days and times and certain settings during those occasions. It comes with various timers and modes and other things we probably forgot. The Dyson’s also has ten power settings giving a good range of airflow options and sound levels, which we will talk more about later.

The Honeywell pretty much has a low, medium, and high power setting as well as a turbo setting which is a little more powerful and a lot louder. It has three timer buttons, a light dimmer button and some alert lights to change the filters. So yeah, pretty basic.

Fan Option

One of the more obvious differences between the Dyson’s and the Honeywell is that the Dyson’s are also fans. You can hit a button on the Dyson to shut off the fan while having the air purifier work as normal.

The fans can oscillate in several ways which will go back and forth, or you can turn off the oscillation but point it in different stationary directions with the app.

One of the first differences we will mention between the Dyson TP04 and the DP04 is that the smaller device, the DP04, can also be tilted up or down where the TP04 cannot.

The Honeywell also has an exhaust, but it’s not meant to be used as a fan and blows air up toward the ceiling.

Final Words

We did test the fan strength of both the Dyson TP04 and the Dyson DP04 to see if the shape affected the amount of air despite them having the same size motor.

We did find that the round fan, the DP04, was just a little more powerful on the high power setting, measured directly at the base. It was pretty close in terms of real-world measurements where we found them both to effectively provide the same amount of air at a given distance.

If you have a large space you want to remove irritants from, We recommend the Airmega 400. All of Coway air purifiers do an excellent job of attacking indoor pollutants, and we highly recommend any of them.
The Levoit Vista 200 air purifier has some strong suits, but in our opinion it falls short of carving out a meaningful niche for itself. Its ideal use would be in a small bedroom occupied by someone who is sensitive to noise.
With high end air cleaning performance and a whisper quiet fan, the Coway AP-1512HH is the perfect combination of power and finesse. It cleared airborne particulates out of our smokey testing room faster than any other model.
