Though most modern homes now come with bright and shiny laminate and tiled floors, there are still some of us who appreciate the luxurious feeling of a good carpet underneath our feet. To keep the carpet feeling soft and fluffy, you need to know how often it should be cleaned properly.
You probably vacuum a couple of times a week when you are doing the rest of your chores, and when something spills on your carpet, you probably clean it up quickly. But these quick fixes may not be the best way to keep your carpet warranty in effect; you may need to hire professional help for that.
Another important factor to consider is how many people you have in your home. Whether it be permanent residents, or lots of guests coming through with dirty shoes, the dirt builds up fast! Combined with messy children and fluffy pets, your carpet is seeing a lot of foot traffic which contributes to how often you should be cleaning the carpet.
Vacuuming should be the first step in your carpet cleaning routine, as it sucks up any excess dirt and dust that may be laying on or just below the surface. Vacuums helps prevent your carpet from looking worn out, as it helps preserve the fibers.
The areas of your home where foot traffic is highest, is obviously going to need the most attention, we recommend vacuuming these areas two to four times a week. Other parts of your home, where there is less activity, can be vacuumed once or twice a week.
It all comes down to common sense: those of you who live alone are going to do far less vacuuming than those of you with a house full of children and pets.
Letting dust and dirt build up in your carpet is going to do much more damage to the carpet fibers than vacuuming.
It may not be the most exciting chore in the world, but you should take the time to vacuum properly. Speed does not equal deeper cleaning.
Spills happen all the time: your kids trample through the house with muddy shoes, the new puppy has an accident in the living room, or maybe you spill a bit of wine after the second glass. The important thing is to make sure these spills are cleaned up as soon as possible.
Carpet cleaning shampoos and other solutions are widely available. These usually come in spray can form. Spray some onto a clean cloth, and be sure to blot the stain. Do not wipe. Start at the edges, and work inwards to the center of the stain; his ensures you do not spread the stain.
Get another clean cloth and rise any excess cleaner away, and then press some paper towels on top. This ensures any remaining moisture is absorbed.
It can be a good idea to call in some professional help if you are worried about your carpet. But just how often should you get some help?
While there is no guideline on when is best to get help, we have some recommendations and some things you should consider:
If you live alone, or have a household with light foot traffic, you should only need to bring in professional help every few years. If you have a busy house, with children, we recommend getting a deep clean every 9 to 12 months. This helps with those muddy sneakers that are dragged across the carpet, or that juice spill that you find out about a couple of weeks later.
If you have people who smoke in the house, you should consider getting your carpet cleaned every six months.
If you have a little fur baby in the house, or maybe several, you should also opt for every six months for a cleaning. Pets come with a lot of fur, and unfortunately, can have accidents on the carpet that vacuuming certainly cannot fix.
If you would prefer, you have the option to rent/buy a specialized carpet cleaner, or a steam cleaner that comes with a carpet attachment. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide when you need to call in some real help. However, if your carpet came with a warranty, you would need to consult it carefully.
Watch Out for Warranties
Various manufacturers will offer a warranty when installing your new carpet. It is important that you check if the warranty comes with any requirements for the cleanliness of your carpet and stick to this strictly. You should also keep a record of all the times the carpet has been cleaned professionally, in case you need to make a claim.
Now that you have all the relevant information, you will have no problem making sure that your carpet stays in tip top shape for many years.
Just make sure to vacuum regularly, clean up any spills quickly, and do not forget to schedule a deep clean! Do not wait till your carpet is looking dull and lifeless; then you may need to have it replaced.
