Introduction to the Kirby Sentria 2

This is an introductory article for complete details be sure to review the use and care manual before using the system. First we will cover the basic parts of the Kirby Sentria 2. Turn the Kirby Sentria 2 on or off by pressing the power button.

The toe touch control is used to select the proper cleaning height. If the Kirby Sentria 2 is too high off the floor, it will not properly. To set the proper height first lower the nozzle all the way down by repeatedly pressing the upper toe touch control pedal. Then press the lower pedal one notch at a time to raise the Kirby Sentria 2. The lowest setting is used for low pile carpets.

Raise the nozzle one or two clicks for hard surface floors and longer fiber carpets. When vacuuming pet hair raise the Kirby Sentria 2 three clicks.

Kirby Sentria 2 TechDrive Pedals

The pedals below the power button control the tech drive power assist. Turn the Kirby Sentria 2 on and lower the Kirby Sentria 2 to the correct setting. Then push down the right pedal. This pedal is marked “D” for drive to turn tech drive on. This makes it easy to push the Kirby Sentria 2 while vacuuming.

The vacuum can be used without tech drive power assist. Put tech drive in neutral by pushing the left button, marked with the letter N down. Before turning the Kirby Sentria 2 off always raise the nozzle as high off the floor as possible and then put tech drive in neutral. This makes it easier to push the vacuum when it is off.

Kirby Sentria 2 Brush Roll

The brush roll indicator light will confirm if the brush roll is spinning. When the brush roll is spinning the light will shine continuously. The light should be “On” for carpet cleaning. If the light does not come on, the brush roll is not spinning. The belt lifter determines whether or not the brush roll will spin. The belt lifter is also used to convert the Kirby Sentria 2 into other modes.

When using the belt lifter you have to raise the Kirby Sentria 2 all the way up. You then have to turn off and unplug the vacuum. Raise the headlight hood and flip out the handle on the belt lifter and turn it counter clockwise until the red arrows lineup. The belt lifter will catch the belt and lift it off the rotating shaft to prevent the brush roll from spinning.

Close the handle and lower the headlight hood to use it as a straight suction cleaner. The brush roll indicator light will be off. To re-engage the belt so the brush roll spends, you have to turn the Kirby Sentria 2 off and unplug it.

Raise the headlight hood and flip out the handle. Turn the lifter clockwise until the green arrows lineup. Close the handle and lower the headlight hood.

Kirby Sentria 2 Disposable Filter Bag

When it is time to change the disposable bag. Turn off and unplugged the Kirby Sentria 2. Unzip the outer bag and pull out the top adapter along with the disposable bag. It is time to change the disposable bag when the dirt reaches the full line. Check that the bag support strap is attached to the top adapter. If not, threat the strap through the small hole on the adapter and secure over the stud. To install a new disposable bag, first place the face plate over the bottom tab.

Then pivot the face-plate up and attach the tabs over the holders. Insert the top adapter and disposable bag inside the permanent bag and zip completely. For best performance use only genuine Kirby disposable bags.

Kirby Sentria 2 Power Cord

The upright handle has a series of fasteners that keep the cord out of the way while vacuuming. The cord snaps into the two holders on the back of handle. The cord can be wrapped around the hooks for storage. To release the cord rotate the upper cord hook down.

Kirby Sentria 2 Mini Emtor

The Mini Emtor collects large and heavy particles that are picked up while vacuuming. To empty the Mini Emtor: Turn off the Kirby Sentria 2 and unplug vacuum from the outlet. Remove the top of the bag by pressing the release button. Then grab the Mini Emtor by the handle at the bottom. Rotate it away from the Kirby Sentria 2 and lift it off.

Hold the Mini Emtor over a newspaper and shake it to remove the particles. Though the vacuum can remove large debris avoid picking up objects such as coins or screws as they may damage the vacuum. Slide the Mini Emtor over the exhaust port, winding up the raised line. Rotate the Mini Emtor towards the bag until it clicks to lock it in place.

To re-attach the bag insert the tap into the handle latch. If the Mini Emtor is not securely locked in place, the safety switch will not allow the Kirby Sentria 2 to turn on.

Kirby Sentria 2 Tilt Latch

The tilt latch locks the handle to make moving the Kirby Sentria 2 easier. Sliding the tilt latch towards the bag allows the user to push down on the handle to lift the vacuum over a door, threshold or throw rug. Sliding the tilt latch away from the bag will lock the base in place before lifting the Kirby Sentria 2 off the floor.

The Kirby Sentria 2 can be lifted with the grip in the center of the handle or underneath the bag arm. The tilt latch also allows the vacuum to be stored in a vertical position. First lower the handle all the way down. Then move the tilt latch away from the bag. Before using the Kirby Sentria 2 again you have to press down slightly and hold on the handle.

Move the tilt latch to the center position. Always hold the handle while moving the tilt latch, because the handle is spring loaded and could fly up when unlatched!

Kirby Sentria 2 Portable Cleaning Mode

The Kirby Sentria 2 can easily be converted to a portable cleaner for mattresses and carpeted stairs. To convert the Kirby Sentria 2 you have to turn off and unplugged the vacuum cleaner.

Then release the top of the permanent bag from the handle. Next you have to remove the power cord from handle too. Use one hand to push the button at the base of the handle and use the other hand to pull the handle up and out of the slot. Then you have to push the portable handle into the slot and insert the bag latch with the zipper facing up. Before using the portable mode to clean a matter you have to use the belt lifter. You need to use the lifter to turn the brush roll off.

The brush roll indicator light will not turn on. Also make sure that the tech drive is in neutral. This will prevent snags in the mattress. To avoid injury be sure that tech drive is in neutral and keep hair and loose clothing away from the brush roll when using the Kirby Sentria 2. To clean the mattress, lower the vacuum cleaner all the way and turn on the vacuum.

When finished raise the head and turn the power off. To remove the portable handle you have to press down the bag release button. Use one hand to push the button at the base of the handle and the other hand to pull the handle up and out of the slot.

Kirby Sentria 2 Canister Cleaner and Attachments

The Kirby system comes with a wide variety of attachments to use in the canister mode. To convert the Kirby Sentria 2 to a canister you have to raise the base of the vacuum cleaner.

Turn the Motor off and unplug the machine. You then have to attach the portable handle and raise the headlight hood and you have to turn the belt lifter until the red arrows line up. Unlock the nozzle and lift it away. Be careful as the motor shaft may be hot as a result of the friction of the belt. Allow the shaft to cool down. Then clean off any debris before assembling the hose.

To attach the hose you have to slide the two hooks over the attaching bar. Push the hose up against the vacuum and then lock it in place. Make sure to lower the headlight of the hood. If the hose is not locked firmly in place, the safety switch will not allow the Kirby Sentria 2 to turn on.

Kirby Sentria 2 Attaching Tools

To attach tools to the hose you have to push lightly, while twisting the tools to the hose. One or two extension wands can be attached to extend your reach. Use the duster brush on irregular surfaces. Do not use the duster brush to clean TV screens or electronics as it may scratch the surface. The upholstery tool is used for cleaning furniture and carpeted steps.

The suction control grip has a valve that slides back and forth to adjust suction. The suction control grip can be used with the attachment hose. Between extension tubes or at the end of the tubes to create a different angle. Use the wall and ceiling brush to vacuum flat vertical surface. You can rotate it on the attachment grip to vacuum the top of book shelves.

The crevice tool with its removable brush cleans dirt from tight places and carpet edges. The surface nozzle can be used on bare floors or for cleaning under low furniture. Attach the inflator-deflator tool to clean very tight areas or to deflate toys.

Kirby Sentria 2 Blower

With a simple conversion the Kirby Sentria 2 can be used in the blower mode. If desired attach the portable handle and turn off and unplug the machine. Remove the head and fasten the air intake guard onto the front of the vacuum cleaner. Make sure to lower the headlight hood. Remove the bag and attach the hose to the air exhaust port.

Line up and twist the hose towards the vacuum cleaner until it clicks to lock in place. Both the air intake guard and the hose must be firmly locked in place or the safety switches will not allow the Kirby Sentria 2 to turn on. Attach the inflator-deflator tool to the hose to inflate low pressure.

Kirby Sentria 2 Portable Sprayer

The portable sprayer is only used in the blower mode. Never use oil or solvent based liquids in the sprayer. The motor is open to the spray and could ignite flammable solvents. To set up a portable sprayer you have to unscrew the jar and fill it three quarters full. If the sprayer must be tilted during use you have to use less liquid.

Screw the jar and the spray tightly together and connect the sprayer to the hose. Point the sprayer away from the machine and turn the Kirby Sentria 2 on. Now squeeze the trigger to spray. Adjust the spray by turning the control on the trigger. Squeeze the trigger fully and use slow sweeping motions. After use you have to remove the jar and rinse all pieces thoroughly.

Allow all parts to dry and reassemble for storage. Never clean the sprayer with flammable cleaning solutions.

Kirby Sentria 2 Portable Shampooer

The portable shampooer is also used in the blower mode only. It is designed for cleaning areas that are difficult to reach with the carpet shampoo system. The portable shampooer is not recommended for use on delicate fabrics. If in doubt try a test patch before you shampoo further.

To set up the portable shampooer to work you have to fill the jar with water and Kirby carpet shampoo according to the directions on the shampoo bottle. Screw the components tightly together and attach the shampooer cap to the end of the portable sprayer. Connect the sprayer to the hose and pointed away from the system.

Now pull the trigger to spray suds. The suds volume can be adjusted by turning the control on the trigger. Lay an even layer of suds over the area to be cleaned. Work the suds into the surface with a brush or a cloth until they disappear.

Rinse and clean the portable shampooer while the area dries. Allow the surface to dry completely then vacuum to remove the dry residue, which contains the dirt and debris. Kirby carpet shampoo can be purchased from Amazon here.

Kirby Sentria 2 Carpet Shampoo System

This section covers the optional shampoo system, which is designed to shampoo, fluff and maintain carpeting. Before using the shampoo system you have to vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Before attaching the shampoo system, turn off and unplug the Kirby Sentria 2. Remove the Mini Emptor and release the bag.

Furthermore you have to remove the nozzle and you have to make sure the carpet shampoo system is assembled and ready to attach. You have to turn the belt lifter on the nozzle so the green arrows lineup. Pull the belt so that it is sticking up in the setting. Then place the nozzle over the belt. Turn the valve lifter counterclockwise until the red arrows lineup.

You should feel tension and the belt lifter will catch the belt and stretch it upward into the nozzle. Center the shampoo tray in front of the vacuum cleaner. Make sure the Kirby Sentria 2 is raised up all the way and guide the head of the nozzle onto the attaching bar. Press the nozzle up against the Kirby Sentria 2 and lock in place.

Turn the belt lifter clockwise until the green arrows lineup. This will allow the brush roll to spin so the system will clean properly. At the end lower the headlight hood. On the shampoo tank make sure the filter and screen are in place.

Kirby Sentria 2 Shampoo Solution

Next prepare the shampoo solution. Unscrew the large cup from the top of the shampoo tank and fill the tank with water to the first line for small rooms and the third line for large room. Use warm water but not too hot and then add the carpet shampoo. Add one cup full for every line of water. When finished you have to replace the cup.

Note that using more than the appropriate number of cups could cause over-foaming and with less there may not be enough foaming. One tank full of solution should clean an area about 9 feet by 12 feet. Larger carpets may require emptying the tray and refilling the tank.

Using Kirby Sentria 2 Carpet Shampoo System

Attach the tanks by matching up the lines on the tank and the exhaust port. Rotate it towards the Kirby Sentria 2 to lock firmly in place and insert one end of the hose into the hole in the tray. Make sure it is firmly attached, then attach the other end to the bottom of the shampoo tank. Plug the Kirby Sentria II in and then turn it on.

If the vacuum cleaner does not turn on, check that the shampoo tank and the tray are both firmly locked in place. If not, the safety switches will not allow the Kirby Sentria 2 to turn on. Lower the nozzle as far as possible. Turn the suds control valve “on” and start moving the vacuum. Suds flow should start immediately. Pull the Kirby Sentria 2 back slowly.

Suds should dispense the full width of the tray. If not move the vacuum more slowly or turn off the power and check to make sure that the filter screen is in place. Clean the shampoo filter if necessary. Push forward to work the suds into the carpet. To shampoo along edges, you have to make sure the tank is on the opposite side of the edge being cleaned.

Once the surface is covered with a blanket of suds you have to turn the suds control valve off and go over the entire area again until all the shampoo is worked into the carpet. Scrub in multiple directions for best results.

Kirby Sentria 2 Carpet Shampoo System Cleaning

When finished, raise the nozzle and turn the Kirby Sentria 2 off. Let the vacuum run for 15 seconds to remove the excess water from the brush roll. Turn the vacuum cleaner off. While the carpet is dry, remove the shampoo system to rinse and clean it. Remove the tray by first unplugging the Kirby Sentria 2 and lifting the headlight hood. Remove the hose from the tray. Then turn the belt lifter until the red arrows lineup. Turn the lock to release the nozzle and carefully lift the shampoo nozzle and carry it to the sink to damp.

Disassemble the shampoo system over the sink. First turn the belt lifter to the right until the green arrows are lined up. Then pull the tray and nozzle apart. Now you have to flip back the shield and remove the brush roll by simultaneously pushing on both ends of the brush roll with your thumbs lifting the tray up. Remove any lint from the brush and rinse the tray and nozzle cold water.

Dry all parts and remove the tank from the vacuum cleaner. To clean the tank you have to remove the sponge filter and the screen cap. Rinse both thoroughly. Rinse the hose out any remaining carpet shampoo solution and rinse the tank. To reassemble for storage place the brush roll on the counter with the tray facing away from you. Lower the tray over the brush roll and pull back the belt.

Dry all parts completely before storing. Once the carpet is completely dry, reassemble the Kirby Sentria 2 as an upright and thoroughly vacuum the shampooed area. This will remove the residue which contains dirt and debris.

Kirby Sentria 2 Accessories

The last part of this guide will describe the additional accessories that are available for the Kirby Sentria 2.

Kirby Sentria 2 Zip brush

The zip brush can be used to clean carpeted steps and upholstery. For best results avoid pressing down heavily on the zip brush. Allow the brush to rotate at maximum speed by gently moving it side to side. To avoid injury do not insert fingers into the revolving brush area and keep the brush flat against the surface being cleaned to avoid throwing particles out.

To clean the zip brush you have to remove it from the hose and use that same hose by vacuuming lint from the brush. Press the button in the front of the zip brush to release the brush ring. Lift the center brush out of the tool and remove any particles or lint. Place the brush back into the tool and turn it until it drops into the slots. Keeping your fingers free of the opening and snap the brush ring back in place.

Kirby Sentria 2 hard floor pad

A hard floor pad is available to aid with dusting bare floors. To install the hard floor pad you first have to unplug the vacuum cleaner. Raise the nozzle to its highest setting and attach the pad onto the nozzle using the spring clips.

Disengage the belt lifter and plug the Kirby Sentria 2 in. Lower the nozzle all the way and put tech drive a neutral before turning the Kirby Sentria 2 on.

Kirby Sentria 2 Floor Care System

The floor care system is used to buff and wax hard floors. Before using the floor care system you have to vacuum the floor. Heavily soiled floors may require damp mopping. To buff the floor assemble the buffer nozzle before attaching. Drop the buffer nozzle onto the buffer brush. Push the belt up against the brush roll with your finger.

While holding the belt in place you have to turn the valve lifter counter clockwise until the red arrows are lined up. You should feel tension and the belt lifter will catch the belt and stretch it upwards onto the nozzle. Remove the nozzle and attach the buffer nozzle. Attach the buffer nozzle to the front and lock it in place.

Turn the belt lifter clockwise until the green arrows line up and lower the headlight hood. Make sure tech drive is in neutral. Hold on to the handle firmly and lower the vacuum cleaner until the brush roll touches the floor. When using the floor care system you have to move the Kirby Sentria 2 back and forth to buff the surface.

Kirby Sentria 2 Wax Applicator

To wax hard floors assemble the wax applicator by pushing the two parts of the handle together until the pen clicks in place. Remove the wax roller from the case by inserting the handle into the open end of the wax roller. Pull the roller out of the bag and save the package. Use the roller to apply a small amount of wax to the floor. It is not necessary to cover the floor complete. Remove the wax roller from the handle by pushing the roller into the bag. Grasp both the bag and the roller firmly.

Push the roller away from you to compress the springs and pull the roller off the handle. Seal the bag to prevent premature drying and store in a safe place away from children and pets. Grasp the handle firmly and turn the Kirby Sentria 2 on. Make sure tech drivers is in neutral. Lower the brush as far as possible and then move the Kirby Sentria 2 over the floor with slow steady strokes to spread the wax. Wait for 5 minutes and when dry go over the floor with the buffer again to buff to a bright sheen.

For marble floors use the same procedures but buff immediately to avoid drying time. Hard floors may be rebuffed anytime. It is not necessary to apply wax every time you buff. Do not stand the buffer on end and do not use the buffer on rubber or asphalt tiles.

Kirby Sentria 2 Carpet Fluffer

The floor buffer can also be used as a fluffer to reset matted nap. Before placing the Kirby Sentria 2 on the carpet, make sure tech drive is in neutral and the nozzle is all the way up. Holding the handle firmly and turn the vacuum off.

Now you have to lower the nozzle one notch at a time until the bristles contact the carpet. Lowering the brush too far can cause certain types of carpet two fuss. Push the vacuum cleaner over the carpet to reset the nap.

Kirby Sentria 2 Turbo Accessory

The turbo accessory can be used for a wide variety of household jobs. Assemble the Kirby Sentria 2 as a canister before using the turbo accessory. Remove the head and attach the hose to the front. To use the turbo accessory as a sander you first have to unsnap the dust shroud at the rear of tool and lift it off.

Tuck the end of the sand paper into the front clap and lock it to hold the sand paper in place. Tightly wrap the paper around the bottom and tuck in the back clap. Finally lock everything in place. With the accessory on a level surface you have to wrap the dust shroud around the sander and snap it close plus inserting the hose. When using a sander it is advisable to use safety glasses. Be also sure no metal objects such as nails are sticking up from the surface to be sanded.

They could damage the sandering causing sparks to ignite the dust. Turn the Kirby Sentria II on then press the “on” button on the top of the sander. Grip the sander at the front and rear while applying light pressure. You have to move the sander over the surface slowly, allowing it to do the work. Don’t force it or lean heavily on it. Replace the disposable filter bag after extended sanding, because dust will pump into the bags.

To use the turbo accessories as a polisher you have to attach the synthetic lamb’s wool pad in the same way the sand paper is attached. However do not use the dust shroud. Use the polisher to polish hard waxed surfaces such as table tops. To use the turbo accessory for scouring attach the scouring pad.
